Last week, the world saw the biggest ransomware attack ever of its kind. Although the attack is not the most sophisticated phish the ACSC has seen, the attack has hit organisations in over 150 countries within 48 hours and could be devastating to businesses that become infected.

WannaCry spreads like a worm by leveraging a Windows SMB vulnerability (MS17-010) that had been previously fixed by Microsoft on the 14th March, 2017. This ransomware outbreak has revealed how many organisations do not have a simple way to do vulnerability and patch management for all endpoints (WinXP to 10, Mobile & macOS) and many do not have regular, automated, onsite backups. Australia and New Zealand companies have largely avoided major downtime, however this is expected to change with employees returning to work this week. This attack is still ongoing and the total damage will be revealed in the coming weeks, it's not too late to protect your business.

Our Chief Information Security Officer, Aaron Bailey spoke with Robbie Buck on ABC Radio this morning to discuss the breaking news. Aaron has warned "Tell your staff to be extra vigilant for suspicious emails with links or attachments.  The best defence is a solid vulnerability and patch management regime as well as regular and automated offsite backup solutions – both of which we cover, and more, in our ASD8 as a Service (#ASD8aaS) offering.”
